The nature of teaching is under the throes of a radical change in our present times. However, it is doubtful whether we have responded fully to the demands of this change. In the past, the major function of teaching was the transmission of knowledge and procedures. Today, thanks to the impact of interpersonal perspective and humanism, the transformative tradition has come to permeate teaching.
Education is no more limited to the building up of knowledge, skills and character of the students and hence educational institutions cannot be mere ivory towers with total academic freedom to do what they like with their programme. The success of any educational process depends on the quality commitment and expertise of the teacher. The shortcoming in teaching processes and the poor achievement levels of the students reflects the deficiencies in teachers’ training and hence there is an alarming need for substantial reforms in these processes. This of course is a challenging task since it calls for a paradigm shift among teachers, teacher educators and education administrators.
