Keeping in view the tremendous potential of Yoga as a health science, especially for stress related psycho-somatic diseases, the erstwhile Central Council for Research in Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy had sanctioned a five bedded Yoga Research Hospital in the year 1970 attached to Vishwayatan Yogashram, then a private society. After realizing the importance and effectiveness of yogic practices in preventive, promotive and curative aspects as revealed by the scientific studies done in the field, Central Research Institute for Yoga (CRIY) was established on 1st of January, 1976 and the staff working in the Yoga Research Hospital were absorbed.
The main activities of CRIY were free Yoga training to general public and scientific research on various practices of Yoga. CRIY remained an Institute for planning, promotion and coordination of yogic research and training till 1998. In view of increasing activities and need for rendering high quality services besides realizing the growing importance of Yoga countrywide, a decision was taken to establish a national institute for Yoga and name it as Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) by merging the Central Research Institute for Yoga (CRIY) in it
