St. Martha?s Hospital was started in the year 1886 by Sisters of the Good Shepherd¸ a Congregation founded by St. MARY EUPHRASIA PELLITIER¸ in 1835 in ANGERS¸ FRANCE. It is an International congregation present in 74 countries with its Generalate in Rome. The congregation established its foundation in India in the year 1854 August 15th.
The Charism of the congregation is to share the compassionate love of Jesus the Good Shepherd to those at the margins of the society especially with women and children. In India¸ the sisters work in nine states¸ expressing the Charism through education¸ health care¸ social work¸ care homes for street children¸ orphan babies¸ un-wed mothers and young girls¸ crisis intervention center¸ training and rehabilitation of migrants¸ child laborers and sex workers¸ prison ministry and pro-life.
Health care is provided through the portals of St. Martha?s Hospital and dispensaries in remote villages.
St. Martha?s Hospital began in 1886 on a piece of land gifted by the then Maharaja of Mysore in appreciation of the services rendered by the sisters of the Good Shepherd¸ during a time of famine and plague.
