DESCRIPTION :

The district of Ahmednagar is rich in Sugarcane production. The soil and the climate are favourable for production of sugarcane¸ which is widely grown in the northern part. There are thirteen sugar mills¸ most of them in co-operative sector¸ in this part.

Industry growth of Ahmednagar has been of a very high order. MIDC Industrial Estate is located outside the town of Ahmednagar on Manmad Road. There are over 1700 industrial units including those of Boots¸ Crompton¸ Garware¸ Kinetic¸ Kirloskar¸ L&T &Indian Seamless Metal Tubes.

Several historical monuments such as ancient temples¸ mosques and forts dot the district and around Ahmednagar town in particular.

The district is also home for many saints and laureates. Sant Dnyaneshwar¸ who lived in the 13th century¸ brought out the essence of philosophical and spiritual learning in Marathi. Sai Baba whose shrine is in Shirdi during his lifetime and after attaining samadhi still draws thousands of devotees to Shirdi.

The district of Ahmednagar is known for political heroes and rulers like Hussain Nizamshah¸ Malikamber¸ Sultana Chand Bibi the great heroine of the Deccan and Shahaji¸ father of Shivaji the Great. Nana Phadnavis¸ the administrator of Peshwas¸ Vithal Sunder Parashrami and Trimbakji Dengle¸ have their origins in this district. India?s Independence movement was also centered in Ahmednagar. Raosaheb Patwardhan¸ Achyutrao Patwardhan¸ both members of the working committee of the Indian National Congress played important roles in the Freedom struggle and the underground movement. Jawaharlal Nehru¸ Sardar Patel and other leaders were interned in Ahmednagar Fort during the Independence movement. The famous Ajanta and Ellora caves are just a few hours away from Ahmednagar.
