Garware Institute of Career Education and Development (GICED) was founded by the University of Mumbai in 1984 through joint efforts of Padmabhushan Shri Abasaheb Garware and Prof. Ram Joshi then Vice Chancellor of University of Mumbai with a vision of conducting various vocational and career oriented courses. These courses aim at preparing men and women for a career in all spheres of the country's economy by linking education with productivity.

The focus of training undertaken by the institute is basically based on creating skilled personnel for various industries. Shri Abasaheb Garware therefore concentrated on students-community coming from humble socio-economic backgrounds with minimum educational qualifications¸ to empowerment the larger section of the society on the one hand and to create a workforce for smooth and efficient running of the industries on the other.
