The congregation of Samaritan Sisters established in the year 1961 by Late Msgr. Paul Chittilappilly with a view to care for the sick and the afflicted especially the lepers.
In 1950?s¸ Thrissur¸ the cultural capital of Kerala was also a place of leprosy. Large number of lepers began to flock to Thrissur town for begging even from the neighbouring states. The multitude of lepers became the cause of great head ache to the people as well as civil authorities and the police officers were beating and chasing these lepers. Msgr. Paul Chittilappilly was a chemistry Lecturer of St. Thomas College¸ Thrissur at that time. He observed this pathetic situation and was deeply moved by this sccene. He decided to provide shelter and minister for these patients. Thus Damien Institute was established during the year 1957 at Mulayam¸ Thrissur. Initially¸ three sisters from the congregation of the sisters of charity came forward for caring these leprosy patients. Later when the number of patients increased and scarcity of caretakers was felt¸ Msgr. Paul Chittilappilly was enlightened by the Holy Spirit to start a new congregation with the special charism of the poor¸ the sick and the afflicted. The motto of the congregation is ? go and do likewise like the Good Samaritan. The congregation of Samaritan sisters officially instituted on 25th January¸ 1961.
