The original source of idea/The founding idea:-
Utkalmani Pandit Gopabandhu Das¸ a freedom fighter and a dedicated social worker of Odisha founded the Samaja¸ a monthly news paper in 1919 to highlight the suffering and problems of the down troddens of the neglected Odisha under British regime. The newspaper became at once prominent and popular by its dauntless and truthful publication of news. On the eve of his death¸ Gopabandhu by a deed of will transferred the ownership of Samaja to Servants of the People Society who to look to its management. He further willed that the profits of the Samaja shall only be utilized for the benefits of the poors' of Odisha for their educational and financial development. Relief to these poor and helpless people in case of natural calamities and sufferings due to diseases was specifically mentioned in his will. He died in 1928 a day after he signed the will.
